Marine sanctuaries are safe havens for sea creatures such as whales, sea turtles, and seabirds. As caretakers of God's creation, we show reverence for special places marine life need -- not only to survive, but to thrive. The United States has a wonderful tradition of marine conservation through establishing many types of Marine Protected Areas: marine national monuments, marine national parks, marine reserves, marine sanctuaries, and wildlife refuges.

Unfortunately, even in areas that once enjoyed conservation protections, God's marine creation is under threat because of commercial interests in U.S. national waters. Remind your U.S. congressional delegation of the importance of Marine Protected Areas.

I urge you to strongly support a marine conservation agenda for existing Marine Protected Areas, and to expand conservation areas in U.S. waters. As a person of faith, it is important to me that our country uses public policy tools to fulfill our duty to be good stewards of all God's creation, including the ocean.

On September 15, 2019, our country celebrates the three-year anniversary of the establishment of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. This is one of many important Marine Protected Areas that need our collective care. Marine Protected Areas support an astoundingly rich diversity of God's marine creation, including some endangered species such as the North Atlantic Right Whale and the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle. Marine Protected Areas also provide a critical place to study the impacts of climate change on Northeast waters.
